Marcus is also very patient person, though he highly dislikes tardiness. He can wait out anything (not anyone) for as long as needed. This most likely stems from the fact that he is very stubborn in nature; one of his favorite sayings is ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks.’ He is also the type that will not take ‘no’ for an answer, it is a word he claims to not understand, unless of course it comes from his own lips. He does not let defeat, denial, or criticism set him back, but rather sets out to prove people wrong, or to change their mind (though sometimes the results are not quite what he wants).
Marcus is not the type of person to trust easily. He will help those in need, walk a woman across the street, break up a fight, stop bullying, etc., but he does not trust people nor their motives. Marcus feels that to trust someone without them first earning that trust is a foolish thing to that could lead to being stabbed in the back, or disappointment. But once that trust is earned, Marcus will be loyal to that person until they cross the line, and then there is no going back.
Marcus is also the type to hold a grudge. If a person does him or someone he cares for a wrong, he almost never forgives them. Occasionally, if he considers the offense great enough, he will go out of his way to get revenge on that person. Marcus sees thing in completely black and white, either someone is good or evil; someone is truly his friend, or someone he does not want to associate with. There is no in-between with Marcus.
Marcus has developed a deep fear and hatred of fires. Fire is what killed his wife and son. He found their summer home burning when he came back from an emergency call at work, though he was supposed to have been on leave for his son’s birthday. His daughter, Kaileigh, was the only to survive, having spend the night three miles away at a neighbor’s house. Since that night, Marcus has had nightmares of fire, hearing his wife and son’s screams of terror. He refuses to even have candles lit when he is in the room. His friends have respectfully understood and tend to douse the candles when he comes into the room, though they have also demanded that Marcus try to get over it. But Marcus argues, how do you fight fear?
